WHO WE ARE
The Mountain City story starts with something that looked like a defeat. Our earliest roots were a small group of friends who had been a part of a “failed” church planting effort. As they reflected on why that work was not successful, they recognized that they had been primarily focused on building a church service, rather than building a church community. With a new clarity that God’s design for His church was to be more than a weekly gathering, they kept praying and asking God if He would work through them to establish a new church community.
In 2014 God made it clear that it was time to try again. He connected that group of friends with a pastor who was hard-wired to love relationship-building, the core thing they knew needed to be baked into the DNA of the church. With his direction, Mountain City Church began planning and gathering in homes to create a vision for what this new community-centered church in Jasper could be like.
After months of informal meetings, we first met for public worship in 2015. While this was a milestone, our founding story naturally helped us remember that what matters most is the community that was growing together all throughout the week. To facilitate that, from the beginning we have maintained small group gatherings, fellowship events, life on life discipleship, and a culture of relational intentionality.
As we have grown, God has provided the space we needed for our weekly gatherings. Along the way we met in several locations throughout Jasper, including outside at a farm during Covid. In 2021, we moved to our current location at 1 South Main Street. Being in the heart of historic downtown Jasper allows us to more easily extend the community that we are building in the Mountain City family out into the rest of our city. This location also allows us to share office space to two of our ministry partners, Young Life of Pickens County and Josiah Venture.
The Mountain City story is still being written. Every week, people are sharing life together and growing deeper in our relationship with God. We invite you to come be a part of it!
